BACOLOD CITY - Coffee shops in the city were buzzing yesterday when businessmen took on the new published in the Visayan Daily Star, that a major planters' group had flip-flopped on its position on the importation of sugar.
Last December 22, 2022, the Visayan Daily Star carried a story on how the planters group appealed to the President and Department of Agriculture Secretary Ferdinand "Bong-Bong" Marcos, Jr. to stop the move to import another 64,050 metric tons of sugar.
In less than 30 days, the position has changed to a "green light" for the importation of 450,000 metric tons of refined sugar to help arrest retail prices.
The quick turnaround in position leaves a lot of questions to those who are closely watching the sugar industry. It is expected that this will be the favorite topic for today's lunch get-togethers in the City of Smiles.
